Question from Christine M.: I want to add sexy muscle definition to my ectomorph body frame. What is the best weekly workout schedule to add muscle? I would love to gain 5 – 10 lbs of muscle so I don’t look like a “naturally skinny girl.”
A: Miller, start incorporating resistance training into your workout at least 3 times a week.
Question from Kate H.: I am getting exercise via treadmill, walking 6 or 7 days a week, increasing speed and time each week (currently doing 50 min, 2.7miles). I’m 57-ish and have 61 lbs left to lose. I’m wondering when is it best to start adding strength training and what type of training I should do at my age?
I don’t want giant muscles, but I would like to wind up with descent abs, smaller thighs and some upper arm definition. And at my age, I’m concerned about losing upper body strength as I get older. Do you have any recommendations?
A: K, work on balance movements and strengthen your core and posture
Question from Deanna K.: I lost 42 lbs on Nutrisystem over 2 1/2 yrs ago and have kept it off but it’s a daily challenge watching everything I eat. Do you have any advice or tips on maintaining? I’m a woman in my 40’s and it’s so easy for weight to just creep on a few pounds here and there.
A: Its a lifestyle change, Deanna…hard work but attainable. Its about eating what you like in moderation. Also try incorporating more fruits & veggies to your eating and start including flexibility training to your workouts
Question from Sue B.: [I’m] having a time with getting any more than the first set of 20 pounds to leave. Drink when I can, I sit at a computer all day so it becomes difficult drinking a lot. 59 yrs old, on NS twice before, so I know it works, just having trouble getting it going again. I Walk in evenings when it isn’t too hot. Overheating is an issue. So what could be a good jump start to work on the next twenty pounds? My dr says that at least 20 more need to come off this next year. I really need a boost.
A: I advise you take the same advice I gave to K. Hickey,
“work on balance movements and strengthen your core and posture.” Also add moderate exercise increases blood flow. Read my blog on walking before running. As long as you begin the process you have made a start and I am here for support.
Question from Christa K.: I really like to run and I love my exercise routine. Other than preventing boredom, is there any reason I should change up my exercise or can I do the same thing each day?
A: #Martinezway is about having fun…doing the same exercise every day is boring and could lead to discouragement. Mix it up! Check out the videos section here on the website for some ideas.
